چکیده

To form a Cooperative Information System in which several preexisting information systems cooperate by means of database interoperability, a methodology for database schema integration is needed. Extensional issues should be taken into account in such a methodology. We show how objects in different databases that represent the same real world object may be correlated through an object identification function (oif), and collapsed in external classes, when there are no dependencies between the component databases. We also extend our methodology to deal with those cases in which, in addition to this oif, existence interdependencies are to be specified and enforced. The powerful abstractions of our BLOOM model are used in both cases.

Reening Extensional Relationships and Existence Requirements for Incremental Schema Integration 1

Schema integration as part of the database design as well as of the database integration process has to deal with extensional relationships among classes of the di erent schemata to be integrated. As a rule, the extensional relationships must be speci ed by the database designer. Partially, some relationships may also be derived from other relationships. Most existing schema integration approac...

Extensional Knowledge for Semantic Query Optimization in a Mediator Based System

Query processing in global information systems integrating multiple heterogeneous sources is a challenging issue in relation to the effective extraction of information available on-line. In this paper we propose intelligent, tool-supported techniques for querying global information systems integrating both structured and semistructured data sources. The techniques have been developed in the env...

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: Practical Approaches to Schema Integration, Evolution and Versioning

Three themes are apparent in recent schema integration, evolution and versioning research. First, the need to reduce the number of schema changes that are necessary. The approach here has been to build into the conceptual and data models the scope to accommodate modest changes to definition. Second, research that aims to reuse the current schema definition through procedures that mask the chang...

Intersection Schemas as a Dataspace Integration Technique

This paper introduces the concept of Intersection Schemas in the field of heterogeneous data integration and dataspaces. We introduce a technique for incrementally integrating heterogeneous data sources by specifying semantic overlaps between sets of extensional schemas using bidirectional schema transformations, and automatically combining them into a global schema at each iteration of the int...

Second International Workshop on Evolution and Change

In this paper, we propose a schema versioning mechanism to manage the schema evolution in temporal object-oriented databases. The schema evolution management uses an object-oriented data model that supports temporal features and versions definition the Temporal Versions Model TVM. One interesting feature of our proposal is that TVM is used to control not only the schema versioning, but also the...
